Abdominal Muscles
The abdominal muscles are located between the ribs and the pelvis. There are five main abdominal muscles – rectus abdominis, pyramidalis, external obliques, internal obliques, and transversus abdominis. They support the abdomen, hold organs (stomach, intestines, pancreas, liver, and gallbladder) in place, regulate pressure in the abdomen, and help with movement. Abdominal strain is the most common condition affecting the abdominal muscles, and it is caused by overstretching the muscles, overuse of the abs, and quick, violent twisting of the abdomen. Abdominal strains are common in sports like tennis, football, golf and baseball.
